Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences

Athens, Georgia
Forging the future of UGA’s biomedical and health science capabilities with a four-story, 135,000 SF research facility.

The Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences is the signature component of UGA’s burgeoning initiative for research, education, and creation of technology in biomedicine, health, and life sciences. Home of UGA’s College of Public Health and Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute, this state-of-the-art translational research facility promotes cross-disciplinary interaction amongst researchers, clinicians, and students in molecular medicine, infectious diseases, public health, and environmental and agricultural sciences.
The four-story research center encompasses about 135,000 SF and contains research space and offices for more than 275 scientists and graduate students. The facility features an 18,000 SF vivarium housing 30,000 rodents and aquatic animals and a 10,000 SF bio-imaging research suite housing EEG and MEG equipment, a 3-Tesla MRI, and a small-bore animal magnet. An additional 35,000 Gross Square Feet (GSF) of interdisciplinary laboratories and special facilities spread over four floors.

• The project was completed in 2006 and features:
• A two-story public entrance lobby with a memorial for the late Senator Coverdell
• 25 Wet laboratories, 30 Procedure Rooms, 3 environmental rooms, Fluorescent microscopy suites, 6 chemical hood rooms, and support spaces.
• The facility will house research space for over 250 researchers to include principal investigators, postdocs, research scientists, and graduate students.
• Research Space for Biosafety Level 2 and 3 Research Activities.
• Offices and laboratories will have direct access to natural light to provide a better working environment for the research teams.
