Case Study: K-12 Education

Atlanta International School, Primary School

Atlanta, Ga
Construction of a three-story, 72,000 SF primary school

As part of the school’s “Think Forward Campaign,” BDR was the day-to-day project manager for a new three-story, 72,000 SF Primary School. This new facility provides K-5 students a 100 percent language immersion initiative that engages design-thinking, project-based problem solving across the STEAM family of disciplines which are the foundation for the IB Primary Years Program.

Midway through construction process, the owner requested a schedule reduction with an early occupancy of 2 months with no increase to the project budget. BDR worked with the construction manager to develop a construction and procurement plan to expedite the process. Each Monday, the project team facilitated an all-hands-on-deck meeting to shave time off of the schedule.

BDR Partners were an invaluable sounding board for our project. It was a great success in large part to them.

The new Primary School is comprised of 12 classrooms with enhanced technology supporting a variety of seating arrangements, a flexible learning commons with a series of breakout spaces, a maker space, outdoor classrooms, and a plaza that connects to other buildings on campus. Through effective stakeholder coordination and decision making, BDR achieved 5.2% savings to provide for the following scope additions:

• Additional classroom millwork storage
• Security upgrades
• Plaza improvements with equipment lift
• Mechanical system upgrades
