PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The 5B-North Challenge Unit houses airborne acute-care beds as well as human research facilities for the Emory University Center for Transmission of Airborne Pathogens. Other key program elements include:

Experimental exposure rooms
Research lab
Clean room chamber
10 fully airborne-isolation rooms
A complete demolition of a 1940s building
Extensive HVAC work

SCHEDULE
Project Duration: Project started in October 2024 and is to be completed June 2026.

CHALLENGES / SUCCESSES
The patient rooms are able to support both research and acute patient care. One challenge was to keep study participants comfortable as they can stay in the rooms for up to 12 days without leaving, so patient rooms had to be clinically functional and comfortable.
