Case Study: Healthcare

Emory University Hospital, Perioperative Expansion

Atlanta, Ga
95,000 SF ongoing renovation and expansion with a $36 Million budget

BDR Partners completed the original Perioperative Master Plan for Emory University Hospital and was engaged to continue project engagement through occupancy of each phase of construction. The project was a 95,000 SF, $36 million renovation and expansion to the perioperative suite at the hospital’s main campus. The program consisted of clinical areas, as well as expansion and renovation of support spaces which included:

• 5 Neuro/General OR’s
• 7 Bi-plane Hybrid OR’s
• 4 Endoscopic Procedure Rooms
• Frozen Section Anesthesia Services
• 46-Bay Combined Pre/Post POHA/ PACU Anesthesia Care Area
• Sterile Core
• Family Waiting Area
• Physician Consult Rooms
• Satellite Pharmacy

In all areas of the project (especially in the POHA/PACU) an emphasis on flexible operation drove the design process in this space. A combined 46-bed platform allows ‘flexing’ between departments and the inclusion of Endoscopic pre- and post-procedural patients. The space utilizes both open bays and private rooms (including negative pressure rooms) organized into operational ‘pods’ which can be staffed by various teams throughout the day.
